“Deer Medicine” Ceramic ornament

During ceremony in 2017, I had a clear vision of a Deer Woman with 3 sacred medicines… peyote, tobacco, and corn. It stayed in my minds eye for a long time. Almost obsessively. Intuitively I knew I had to paint her. I recall this one being a bit of a process… she wouldn’t allow me to finish her and I remember being so frustrated. I understood that I needed to spend more time understanding tobacco medicine. For months I used it in many offerings and prayed with it coming to develop more of a relationship with this medicine. When I picked up my canvas again, it flowed with ease and I was able to finally complete the spirit of this painting.
